On your tours of the fairgrounds, I hope you have taken a moment to view the art exhibit here at the Fairgrounds. As usual, there are some fantastic pieces of fine and photographic art. Over the years, I have disagreed frequently with the judging as to ribbon awards and Best of Show. This year, the Best of Show went to a woman on a swing. It is a simplistic yet busy piece of oil on canvass. You can see and feel the motion of the girl in the swing. It has life and presents something very simple in a new and unique manner. Though an absolutely wonderful piece, it is not Best of Show in my opinion.
Rather, at the end of the hall, nearly hidden from view is a diminutive statuette titled 'Melancholy'. Rising in an almost prayerful posture, this drawn out feminine feature bring out to the viewer the eternal sadness that haunts this creature. You can sense her sadness. Her lines are drawn out transitioning from sharp to invisible. To me, this is one piece that I would actually pay money to buy. It should be Best of Show.
There are other interesting pieces; such as the haunting stare of a cat through a window, an eye swirling around itself, a passionate nubian princess, and the requisite shots of children, puppies, and nature.
What is NOT art and really lost something in its translation was a renditoin of the Mona Lisa complete with tears. Making this recreation more terrifying is the presentation of the WTC towers in the background; one flame and the other with a plane moments from impact. I dont get it. Perhaps someone can explain. It seems like a serious clash of messages and metaphors. What is the connection between Da Vinci and the Twin Towers and why would the bitch be crying? I know art can sometimes be a stretch but this one hurts more than a rubberband twanged off your nipples.
There is a fantastic display downstairs in the art building of the Midway here at the Fairgrounds ... a complete model. It contains nearly every ride that is or has been on the midway. If it has been a long time since you have seen your favorite, then a moment to admire the detial and history in this exhibit would well be worthwhile. It is near perfect in every detail except one .... THERE RE NO PEOPLE. Heck, even on the coldest wettest nights here at the Fair, there were ALWAYS people around. One night, there were more troopers out than civilians, but still it is NEVER empty.

Do you know the guy with the booth in the pan-african area selling $300 uncontested divorces? He's not one of the heavy hitters but it was creepy to see him sitting there in his booth, salivating.
"Ooh honey, let's talk to this fair-lawyer about custody, ok? Then we'll get a pizze fritte."
By the way you can get some excellent plantains in the caribbean food booths and my brood had a lovely time at the drumming circle there.

i made it to the african village first time last night. we too enjoyed the jerk food and banging music.
but when i seen mister divorces are us, i almost puked. good concept, terrible execution. there is a lot a lawyer can do here, both in terms of entertainment, revenue generation, and in terms of providing assistance. cut rate divorces are not the answer and were just plain tacky. If i could afford it, you bet I would have my own THE LAWYER IS IN booth somewhere near the midway.
