Mark, you do an excellent job relating what it's like to be Templeton at the Fair. I would not presume to suggest a thing different, or attempt to publish my own blog.
But just because I think someone else should spew a little, here is my little journal.
I'm curious.... I read your posts as someone who has done the Fair many times, and could easily recognize almost everything you wrote about. How do your postings read for someone who has never been to the Great New York State Fair?
This year for me was a little different, although it was not intended to be that way. I took my kids on Friday... we had some fun, but at 11 & 15, I sensed they are getting bored with it. Too bad, but I'm sure that they will develop their own ways of experiencing it (or not) in the years to come.
Oh yes. We just happened to meet Bill Clinton. Not just see him - my son shook his hand, and he said hello to me. (Boy, he has lost a LOT of weight.)
Yesterday I did the Labor Day walk-through for the first time ever. I went by myself, as I have done at least once each of the last 4 years. I love going at my own pace, hanging out, doing 'different' things, having a few drinks, and watching all the people. Counting funny t-shirts, goofy people, bra-less babes (and not-so-babes), overweight (or over-age) people wearing inappropriate clothing, and laughing at guys who think way too much of themselves.
Rode the Regional Market version of the 'ghetto bus'. (FYI Mark: it was pretty much the same as your Shoppingtown bus.)
After 25 years, I finally saw Charlie Daniels. Awesome show.
I finally hung out on the deck at the West End. (And the Red Sox lost too -- BONUS!)
Lots of t-shirt slogans. Funniest: "I left the band, now I just play with myself."
Most inappropriate (on a shapely girl maybe 15 years old): "Made you look."
Most tempting: "Save a horse - ride a cowboy."
Stupidest: "Stupidity is not a crime. You are free to go." (seen on 4 differenent people, none of whom appear to be Mensa candidates.)
Scariest: "Do me. Do you?" (why scary? you had to see "her" to understand.)
The one that made me wonder: "You laugh at me because I am different. I laugh at you because you are all the same." (Interesting commentary, but it was on a 14 year old boy, who I somehow think did not really understand the point.)
Favorite (not counting the one I wore): "Blondes are cool, but brunettes are hot."
Overall, I'm glad I went, but I have to say.... I'm glad it's over too.
Can't wait for next year.
============
What did I learn this year? Fried dough, and Gianelli's sausage, and $7/gallon milk, and deep-fried oreos, and london broil sandwich, and $1 hot dogs, and ice cream, and bloomin' onion, and LOTS of beer do not make a good formula for losing weight.
Labor Day I wore a boring, blue golf shirt. No slogan.
Friday I wore a black t-shirt with white lettering: "Out of my mind. Please leave a message."
Got several comments and laughs. One guy went out of his way to come over to me and tell me about his shirt at home, which said "I didn't lose my mind, I sold it on e-bay." _________________ ---------------
